SIGNUP Q&A: TEACHERS

Which Challenge(s) do I sign up for?

Schools Challenge vs Student & Schools Challenges

  • There are 2 Challenges in the MATHletes: the Schools Challenge and the Student Challenge. When you go through the signup, you will automatically enter your students into both Challenges, unless you opt-out.
  • If you select “Schools Challenge only”, all students’ points will be aggregated for the school total, but none will be listed individually on the student leaderboard, nor will they be eligible for the in-person playoffs.
  • If you select “Student & Schools Challenge”, points are aggregated for the school AND students are eligible for the mathletes.ie public leaderboards. The information shared on these leaderboards includes: Student Nickname in Khan Academy, school, class/year, city/town, county, performance.
  • If you select “Schools Challenge only” and later decide you would also like to enter all of your students in the Student Challenge, please email schools@mathletes.ie
  • If only a few of your students would like to be in the Student Challenge, you should select “Schools Challenge only” and then have select students also register individually themselves in the Student Challenge, by visiting www.khanacademy.org/mathletes when they are signed into their Khan Academy account.

What are the permission slip & notice requirements?

Given the release of student data from Khan Academy to MATHletes, and the public display of student leaderboards in the Challenge, we ask teachers to get certain permissions from parents and students. We have provided templates to print off to make this as easy as possible. Please have these completed in order to participate.

How do I sign up for MATHletes & Khan Academy?

SignupsOpenDec1

If you already have a Khan Academy account, you will sign in using your existing account to enter it into the Challenge. If you are new to Khan Academy, this signup will walk you through setting up an account

How should I name my classes?

In your KA coach dashboard, go to "Manage Students" in the top bar, then select "New Class" on the left.

ManageClasses

This screen will pop up prompting you to enter a class name. Use the class names listed below.

NameClass

Make sure that you name your classes using exactly the naming format provided below, and sort all students into these classes.
If class name name is not exactly right, or students are not added to a class, their points will not be counted.

(you should copy and paste these names for your classes as you create them in you Khan Academy account)

ROI classes/year name
NI class/year name
4thclassmathletes primary6mathletes
5thclassmathletes primary7mathletes
6thclassmathletes year8mathletes
1styearmathletes year9mathletes
2ndyearmathletes year10mathletes
3rdyearmathletes year11mathletes
TY4thyearmathletes year12mathletes
5thyearmathletes year13mathletes

Note: if you have multiple classes in a single year (i.e. 3 groups of 2nd years), you should add them all to ONE 2ndclassmathletes group. You can create additional classes (i.e. 2nd year HL 2015, 2nd year Ordinary, 2nd year HL 2) and add the students to those classes as well if you would like to track each of the groups separately.

What mission do I assign?

When you create your classes, the system will ask you to assign the class to a mission. The goal of missions is to keep students focused on content that is relevant and challenging for them. Below are the recommended missions to assign each class/level. You may change this if you feel it is not appropriate, and students may explore other missions, but the goal is to keep students challenged and not just reviewing easy skills.

Republic of Ireland class/year
Northern Ireland year
Khan Academy starting mission
4th class Primary 6 3rd grade
5th class Primary7 4th grade
6th class Year 8 5th grade
1st year Year 9 6th grade
2nd year Year 10 7th grade
3rd year Year 11 8th grade
4th year/TY Year 12 Geometry or Algebra 1
5th year/pre-leaving cert Year 13 Algebra 1 or Algebra 2

I’m signed up. Now what?

MATHletes Challenge 2015 launches January 5th, 2015

You can introduce your students to the site before the holiday, and become familiar with the tools yourself, but the real momentum starts in the new year!

Only the points accumulated after January 5th will count for the Challenge, except if your students qualify for the Champions League. Students qualify for the Champions League is they have over 250 mastery points on January 5th, and there is a different scoring system for these students to “unlock” past points. Please refer to the scoring section on the Student Challenge pagefor more information on this scoring.

If you want some tips to get started, check out our ‘Start Simple, Just Start’ post on the mathletes.ie blog , or take a look through Khan Academy’s Coach and Classroom resources. Be sure to read through the Schools Challenge overview to familiarize yourself with the leaderboards, weekly challenges, and structure of the Challenge. Good luck!

SIGNUP Q&A: STUDENTS

What if my school is already competing? Do I need to signup again here?

If your school is already competing in the Schools Challenge, your teacher most likely automatically entered you into the Student Challenge too – so you’re already flying! (if you aren’t sure, check!) If he/she chose to opt-out and not signup individuals, you can always signup as for the Student Challenge here. Make sure you use the same Khan Academy account for signing up, and your points will go for both Challenges.

What if my school decides to enter the Challenge, but I already have my own account that I have been working on?

If you have been competing as an individual, and your school decides to enter the Schools Challenge later on, awesome! Just have your teacher add your existing Khan Academy account to their coaching account, , and your points will count for both Challenges.

What maths mission should I be working on?

Once you have finished signing up for the Challenge, make sure that you are working in the correct mission. You are automatically put into the “World of Math” and you should choose a new mission based on your class/year. You should start by focusing on completing this mission, and moving beyond. Khan Academy is all about personalised learning - if you would like to explore other missions and topic areas in the World of math, you can. However, make sure that you stay focused and push yourself during the Challenge phase!

Republic of Ireland class/year

5th class Primary7 4th grade

I’m under 13 - what do I need to signup?

If you are under 13 years old: you will need a parent to sign you up for the Student Challenge. Go grab them and signup together!
